Introduction and description

Hypnotherapy is actually a combination of four main activities:

But what makes it a technique in its own right is that you don't actually do them - they are done to you.  In effect you lie back and let it happen.  A trained hypnotherapist helps you to relax, become befuddled, suppress your learning and suppress, on a temporary basis, your memory.

There are various states this can produce, from a light trance -  useful in obtaining past perceptions, to a deeper trance useful in obtaining well buried memories and perceptions you need to confront, and then on to even deeper trances used in healing and anaesthesia.  And yes you did read the last sentence correctly, hypnosis is used to anaesthetise people - I have an observation for just this very action.

It is possible to hypnotise a person so completely, they remember nothing and this is what entertainers do - hypnotists -  who amuse the audience by showing how much control they have over the person by getting them to do embarrassing or otherwise ridiculous things.

And here we see the dangers of the technique because the susceptible innocent matched with the inscrutably clever up to no good, is no match.  You have to know and trust your hypnotherapist to the absolute last letter for this to be a useful technique.

This website is not going to teach you how to be a hynotherapist, you need to either go to one who has the proper qualifications or get them yourself.  But what follows is by way of a taster as to the sort of techniques that are used and that have produced results

It is worth noting that Milton Erickson also employed the additional activities of

How it works

You need to have open the Model of the Mind and to have read the section on How spiritual experience works.

The process of Relaxation helps to still the 5 senses and the nervous system as well as the autonomic system.

All the other techniques then help to still, to varying degree the Memory and the system of Learning.  If you add Milton Erickson's techniques , you have almost complete suppression of any intellectual activity or input, as well as removal of threats and obligations.

Where past Memories are a problem, Memory is not stilled, so the techniques are geared to the objective.  In all cases, however, there is the aim to stop or squash the Reasoning function.

As the Intellect becomes progressively more confused bemused or dulled, and the sensory systems relax, the Will can take a back seat and the Composer steps in and we get our spiritual experience.  Unless of course the hypnotherapist or hypnotist steps in and takes the place of the Will...................

  • It works - very well
  • You don’t have to do anything, you can just sit back and let it happen.

The real disadvantage and the danger is that it works just a little too well.

Michael Nash in Scientific American when writing about the ‘The Truth and the Hype of Hypnosis’ found that using hypnosis, scientists have temporarily created compulsions, certain types of memory loss, false memories, and delusions in the laboratory.

Robin Waterfield 2002 Hidden Depths: The Story of Hypnosis
a person can act, some time later, on a suggestion seeded during the hypnotic session. Post-hypnotic suggestions can last for a long time. A hypnotherapist told one of his patients, who was also a friend: 'When I touch you on the finger you will immediately be hypnotized.' Fourteen years later, at a dinner party, he touched him deliberately on the finger and his head fell back against the chair.

According to a Dr Hartland, in 1971, a patient who was terrified to go into the street because of the traffic was once told by a hypnotist that when she left his room, she would no longer bother about the traffic and would be able to cross the road without the slightest fear. She obeyed his instructions so literally that she ended up in a hospital.

Losing will and reason has serious repercussions, it can be misused by those with evil intentions, and as we can see even those without evil intention can cause harm, by being [frankly] stupid.

Saint Thomas Aquinas
The loss of reason is not a sin in itself but only by reason of the act by which one is deprived of the use of reason. If the act that deprives one of his use of reason is licit in itself and is done for a just cause, there is no sin; if no just cause is present, it must be considered a venial sin.
