Background

A description of the experience

Névroses et les idées fixes (On neuroses and fixed ideas), Mr. Pierre Janet

Also quoted in Gabriel Delanne - Materials for use in the study of Reincarnation

In addition to the immense array of auditory or olfactory, tactile, cenesthetic and other visual sensations that we have consciously felt, there are still other impressions that have entered us in a manner that is almost stealthy and have been imbedded without our knowledge …the fixed idea is often ignored by the patient, which is the cause of all his mental and physical disorders.

Often the existence of the fixed idea can only be uncovered during attacks, dreams, sleepwalking, or by subconscious acts and automatic writings. In a word, these ideas remain below or rather outside the normal consciousness, and yet still exert a predominant influence, since they are the origin of the subject's illness.
