Introduction and description
Both Fever and Hyperthermia describe a symptom - an elevated body temperature. The difference between a fever and hyperthermia, is that:
- A fever is deliberately produced by the body to deal with pathogens, in an attempt to kill them off in the body, or if they are toxic substances to expel them via sweating
- Hyperthermia in contrast is the inability of the body to deal with either the external temperature or the chemical reactions a pharmaceutical has induced. In essence the chemicals in the pharmaceutical have completely disrupted the body's metabolic and thermoregulatory systems.
The opposite to hyperthermia is hypothermia, which occurs when the temperature drops below that required to maintain normal metabolism.
Symptoms
The temperature bands are as follows
- Normal 36.5–37.5 °C (97.7–99.5 °F)
- Hypothermia <35.0 °C (95.0 °F)
- Fever >37.5–38.3 °C (99.5–100.9 °F)
- Hyperthermia >37.5–38.3 °C (99.5–100.9 °F)
- Hyperpyrexia >40.0–41.5 °C (104–106.7 °F)
The symptoms that then accompany these temperature rises are as follows:
- Profuse sweating - and a raging thirst for water to maintain the sweating. If the condition that caused the fever or hyperthermia persists or is not addressed, the person will eventually become very dehydrated unless more fluids are given
- Heat cramps - muscle spasms that result from loss of large amount of salt and water with cramping in the abdomen, arms and calves. Heavy sweating causes heat cramps, especially when the water is replaced without also replacing salt or potassium.
- Dilation of blood vessels - The arteries and veins dilate to dissipate the heat away from the body. The limbs and face will appear flushed. The lowered blood pressure that results may lead to dizziness and confusion, and there may be arrhythmias and a weak pulse
- Headache – resulting from the dehydration and the lowered blood pressure
- Hallucinations, out of body experiences, near death, death – if the dehydration persists and the blood pressure becomes very low, the person will eventually suffer from hypoxia – lack of oxygen to the brain and again if this persists the person will die, principally because the brain is dying by stages
Thus as one can see the key to helping someone is to first and foremost keep them hydrated, - an unlimited supply, frequently given, of warm clean water, with electrolytes added. If they can eat potassium-rich foods like bananas and apples, these are also helpful.
We hope it is clear that one should treat hyperthermia differently to fever. The causes are different and thus the treatment is different.
Hyperthermia
Hyper thermia is the inability of the body to thermoregulate because of:
- 'excess' radiation or
- pharmaceuticals.
What is 'excess' is not an absolute thing, it depends on the difference between the person's actual body temperature, the external temperature and the capability of the thermoregulation systems to work.
If the person has hyperthermia, it is essential the cause is addressed - in other words you need to find out why there is too much heat radiation and/or which particular chemical is poisoning the body and disrupting the heat regulation systems.
Not drunk enough water
It is possible for example, that the radiation is not what one would describe as excessive, but the person is dehydrated and thus cannot sweat to reduce their temperature. The treatment is thus to make sure the person has enough clean water.
Bodily exertion
Obviously, the more a person exercises or performs strenuous activities, the more heat they will produce as a consequence. Thus Frenetic exercise of any sort, might raise the body temperature if one has not drunk enough water beforehand - beforehand being key, as it takes time for water to travel through to the pores.
On a very hot day, the body can generate heat beyond its ability to cool itself, even when we are walking gently, because the heat and humidity of the environment reduce the efficiency of the body's normal cooling mechanisms - sweat evaporates and the evaporation cools the skin, but if the humidity is high, the evaporation will not be as efficient. If the person is dancing in a club, much the same effects can be produced. Other factors, such as drinking alcohol [which dehydrates], eaty salty food [which dehydrates] can exacerbate the condition.
So the answer is to drink more water before going out or undertaking any form of exercise.
Using deodorants and anti-perspirants
Maybe they have been extremely unwise and stopped themselves from sweating in a warm environment by the use of deodorants or anti-perspirants.
Some deodorants allow you to sweat but deodorise the pathogens being expelled, [we only smell when we are exuding pathogens]. Anti-Perspirants stop sweating altogether. The best way to stop yourself from smelling and make sure you are free of pathogens is to either have frequent warm water showers to wash away the pathogens or wear clothes that can soak up sweat and pathogens together and change your clothes.
And to stop using anti-perspirants and deodorants.
Other pharmaceuticals causing hyperthermia
The eHealthme site collects the Adverse Drug reports submitted by doctors to the FDA and SEDA in the USA. It then summarises them for ease of use.
We originally provided a direct link to the Hyperthermia page on this site and the pharmaceuticals that can cause it, but the eHealthme website developers frequently reorganise the site and thus break the links. Thus in order to find out which pharmaceuticals are implicated in Hyperthermia
- Follow the LINK to the eHealthme website
- Using the ‘All conditions’ index find the appropriate entry
- Now scroll down until you get to the section marked ‘Drugs that could cause ”
The list shows you all the drugs implicated in CAUSING Hyperthermia as well as the number of people who have made a complaint to their doctor and had their case reported by him. Note that it is up to the doctor whether he reports or not.
As of October 2016, about 3,250 pharmaceuticals were in this list. We found this an extraordinary number. Remembering that these figures are directly obtained from Adverse Drug reports submitted by doctors, what this is telling us is that 3,250 drugs given to people already sick are causing hyperthermia - disruption of their thermoregulation systems.
Examples include:
- Medications that reduce vasodilation, sweating, and other heat-loss mechanisms, such as anticholinergic drugs, antihistamines, and diuretics - In this situation, the body's tolerance for the excessive environmental temperatures can be too limited to cope with the heat, even while resting.
- Many psychotropic medications - such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and tricyclic antidepressants, can cause hyperthermia.
- Malignant hyperthermia is a rare reaction to common anaesthetic agents (such as halothane) or a reaction to the paralytic agent succinylcholine. Malignant hyperthermia can be fatal.
If we take a drug such as Nifedipine, sold under the brand names Adalat among others, a medication used to manage angina, high blood pressure, Raynaud's phenomenon, and premature labor. As of October 2016, it alone had resulted in 626 ADRs.
Infinitor, also known as Everolimus is currently used as an immunosuppressant, again as at October 2016, it had resulted in 1199 ADRs. Remicade, another immunosuppressant had 4,450 ADRs.
Salbutamol, also known as albuterol and marketed as Ventolin among other names, is used to treat asthma, exercise-induced bronchospasm, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as at October 2016, it had resulted in 2323 ADRs. And these figures are not atypical.
A great fuss is made about so called illegal drugs - amphetamines, cocaine, PCP, LSD, and MDMA and the hyperthermia they produce. In some cases, the hyperthermia is the result of the setting in which they were taken and the dehydration that results, but amphetamines because they speed you up, undoubtedly generate hyperthermia.
We know this because Ritalin/Concerta and Adderall - both amphetamines and central nervous system (CNS) stimulants used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy, as at October 2016, had resulted in 977 ADRs.
Fever
The body has a number of methods by which it fights pathogens.
- Mouth - It lines the mouth with friendly bacteria which repel unfriendly pathogens - unless we are so stupid as to use antibacterial mouthwashes
- Nose - it lines the nose with hairs to trap the big pathogens, mucus to trap the small pathogens and as a last resort it blocks the nose using histamine to protect us from small and dangerous pathogens. Unless of course we use anti-histamines and nasal sprays.
- Stomach - It provides us with stomach acid so strong that it not only breaks down our food, but also kills pathogens we have ingested. Unless we are so stupid as to use PPIs [Proton Pump Inhibitors] and antacids to negate the acid.
- Vomiting - If the acid does not appear to be working it then makes us sick, in an attempt to expel the pathogen. Unless we are so stupid as to use anti-emetics which stop us from being sick
- Intestine - it lines the intestine with a great swathe of friendly bacteria which both help digest food, but also further protect us from any pathogens that have wheedled their way in. Unless of course we are so stupid as to use anti-biotics which destroy all that friendly bacteria and leave us open to attack via the blood system
- Diarrhoea - it expels pathogens as rapidly as possible using water to flush the danger away. Unless of course we have been so stupid as to use anti-diarrhoeal medication
- Ears - it traps and expels pathogens via ear wax, natures little miracle substance. Unless we poke our ears causing perforated ear drums or flush the wax away.
- Skin - it covers our skin with a rich biome of microbes that act to repel pathogens from the skin. Unless we use antibacterial washes and shower gels
- Blood brain barrier - it provides a blood brain barrier to prevent anything in the blood from entering the brain. Unless of course we have dental amalgam fillings with mercury, or lead in petrol, or aluminium in our food, in which case all these heavy metals destroy the blood brain barrier
- Immune system - it provides us with a very effective immune system that attempts to fight anything that has got into the body. Unless of course we completely suppress this immune system using immunosuppressants - antibiotics, antihistamines and the devil incarnate glucocorticoids.
- Sweating - it provides us with a very efficient system by which pathogens close to the skin's surface can be expelled via the pores and washed away. The heat is needed to promote the sweating, but it also kills some pathogens. Unless of course we are so stupid that we use anti-perspirants and deodorants that block the pores
But then we would never be this stupid would we? It would be like putting your head in a gas oven with a lighted match to see if the gas was on.
The final armoury in the immune systems bag of tricks - the use of fever - raises the temperature of the body to promote sweating using its flushing mechanism, as well as raising body temperature as a whole in the hope that it kills the pathogen, but does not kill cells - or at least not too many.
In effect if the person has a fever, ideally one should leave well alone. The body is attempting to kill, or expel a pathogen. The severity of the fever is proportional to the danger of the pathogen - virus, fungal infection, bacteria [more probably a bacteriophage], or parasite. The body knows the risks of the high temperature, on the other hand the immune system will also know the virulity of the pathogen. The auto-immune system - as long as we do not interfere with it, is perfectly capable of defending its own - and you.
So immersing people in cold baths, patting their fevered head with a cold compress, sponging their poor little sweaty body with cold water is entirely and totally unproductive and unhelpful. You could be killing them. It may stop the delirium, the nightmares, the hallucinations, the visions and out of body experiences, but it won't stop the pathogen. If they are not dehydrated, they don't die from fever, they die from a pathogen, very often a pathogen that is destroying organs.
If you read the medical literature, the writers say things like "Other possible, but rare, causes of hyperthermia are thyrotoxicosis and the presence of a tumor on the adrenal gland". But all this is saying is that a pathogen is attacking these glands, causing all sorts of imbalances in how these organs perform, and the body is attempting to kill the pathogen.
The medical profession, in the USA in particular, have somehow convinced themselves in a frenzy of NeoDarwinian logic, that because the body is [as far as they are concerned] simply an accidental mutation in the span of evolutionary history, and mutations aren't always good ones, that our bodies are a mass of ill conceived non functioning organs, a sort of miraculous accident.
As far back as 5000 years ago, when medicine was based on plants and healers, the theory was based on the fact that the body was a beautifully designed and engineered thing, perfect in its conception and design, but what made it malfunction came from OUTSIDE THE BODY.
They were right, our NeoDarwinian God-haters were and are wrong.
Pathogens are to be found outside the body. And it is they that are the cause of ALL illness.
We don't have inherited illness, either, we have a mutation in genes which has caused illness, but which was itself caused by a pathogen, very often one that affected the baby during gestation. The same illness appears in a number of families because they are sharing pathogens, they live together!!
And finally here is a paper that shows that fever is an essential part of the body’s response to healing. We may think the heat is highly dangerous, but it isn’t, as long as the heat is produced by the body itself, it is an essential part of the body’s response to pathogens…………
Local hyperthermia could induce antiviral activity by endogenous interferon-dependent pathway in condyloma acuminata - Zhu LL, Gao XH, Qi R, Hong Y, Li X, Wang X, McHepange UO, Zhang L, Wei H, Chen HD; State Key Department of Dermatology, No. 1 Hospital of China Medical University, Shenyang 110001, China.
Local hyperthermia has been successfully used in the treatment of viral warts by mechanisms that have largely remained unclear. Using an organotypic culture system, we found that hyperthermia at 42 °C and 45 °C could induce a significant increase in the transcriptional expression of interferon…. Local hyperthermia was proved effective in treating human papillomavirus-infected skin. These results suggested that hyperthermia took effect partly by inducing the expression of local endogenous interferon and partly by subsequent IFN-induced antiviral activity.
Treatment
FIND THE CAUSE and ADDRESS THE CAUSE
Are you dealing with hyperthermia or a fever?
Hyperthermia
Hyperthermia is caused by pharmaceuticals and various forms of radiation exacerbated by dehydration, thus the key is to keep them hydrated, - an unlimited supply, frequently given, of warm clean water, with electrolytes added. If they can eat potassium-rich foods like bananas and apples, these are also helpful. As long as they can sweat profusely, their temperature should lower by itself.
If you are sure that it is hyperthermia and not a fever, then luke warm water dabbed on them which is allowed to evaporate should help temporarily replace the lack of sweat.
Remove the harmful pharmaceuticals. Dispose of them safely. Many pharmaceuticals in the list above can also do severe environmental damage.
The best place for pharmaceuticals and all toxic waste is down a deep deep hole
Fever
If it is a fever, keep them hydrated, -a fever is caused by viruses, bacteria, fungal infection, parasites, toxins such as heavy metals, and it may be caused by imbalances in vitamins, amino acids, and minerals.
Give the person access to an unlimited supply, frequently given, of warm clean water, with electrolytes added. If they can eat potassium-rich foods like bananas and apples, these are also helpful.
Soak up the sweat with towels, towelling robes, absorbent cotton clothes or clothing, these will be full of pathogens, so boil them frequently.
Keep the person warm, so they can continue sweating. Boost the immune system by sleeping. Sleep and sleep and sleep in a quiet peaceful stress free place, no noise, no light and absolute comfort. As no hospital I know of supplies these conditions, home may be the best place.
How it works
Why do people with high temperatures have such profound experiences - hallucinations, out of body experiences, visions, near death experiences and more.
To understand how it works, we need to follow the sequence of reactions to overheating.
Physically
The body dilates the blood vessels in an attempt to dissipate the heat, as a consequence the skin may become red and hot and there may be swollen lips. The body will attempt to cool the skin via perspiration, but as fluid is lost, the ability to cool the body through perspiration will fail and the skin will feel dry. The dehydration resulting from the heat stroke can produce nausea, vomiting, and headaches and you will see from the description for dehydration, that it may itself produce spiritual experiences.
Perhaps the major contributor to spiritual experience, however, is the low blood pressure resulting from the dilated blood vessels. This can lead to fainting or dizziness, as the supply of oxygen to the brain is reduced.
Heart rate and respiration rate increase as blood pressure drops and the heart attempts to supply enough oxygen to the body, but after some time this will be ineffective. It is at this point that spiritual experience may occur ranging from hallucinations to full out of body experiences. If the hyperthermia is very severe, the person may get a near death experience.
Thus the principle cause of spiritual experience from fever or hyperthermia physically is hypoxia.
Logically
It may be helpful now to refer to the Model of the Mind and to have read the generic description of How spiritual experience works.
Much of our Reasoning and Memory at times of real illness are not essential functions. Thus these two functions are actually suppressed.
What takes the place of these functions is an overwhelming input of messages from the sensory systems – all of them – that says HELP HELP HELP – we are being deprived of oxygen – all of us, we are dying DO SOMETHING.
But the Will, is unable to do something – it has no learnt function with which to counter the Threat and it is struggling all the time to ensure the Autonomic systems keep going.
Eventually the Will exhausted by the battle, gives in and the Composer takes over and we have our spiritual experience.
