Introduction and description
What I am about to say will be disputed by many scientists and biologists, but it is clear from reading the literature that the definition of poisons is not agreed upon anyway.
I have a separate section for toxins. A toxin is often a man-made substance, a poison is usually a naturally occurring substance - in effect found in nature. A toxin is any substance which the body is not equipped to handle. It has no use in the body. In contrast, a poison may have a use, but the dose in which it may be given may prove destructive.
Whether something is a poison or not is dependent on the dose given. Any substance at the wrong dose is poisonous and can kill. Vitamin A in overdose proportions can kill.
Once you have developed a Food allergy, all sorts of foods can become poisonous to you, which may not have been before.
But the potency of substances varies enormously such that a truly tiny dose of one substance can be a killer whereas the same amount of another substance may have absolutely no effect.
The whole of homeopathic medicine works on this principle. All natural substances have their uses but you have to know the potency.
The principle of homeopathic medicine is based on the idea that the body is a functional unit and works like a set of scales. If the scales are out of balance then something is needed on the ‘other side’ equal to it in potency to get the system back in balance.
Thus substances are chosen not because they bind to receptors or act chemically on various organs, but because functionally [and this is key] they can act to affect the intensity of a function bringing it back into balance.
Poisons and their medical uses
If we are wildly out of balance a tiny dose of a so called poison may actually be exactly what we do need to get us back in balance – in that case it is no longer a poison it becomes a medicine!
Poisons found in stings, venom, excretions etc and used as a form of defense or attack by the creature or plant concerned are occasionally used in tiny amounts to heal. A dear friend used to ease his rheumatism using bee stings when my husband and I kept bees. Whatever probably agonistic activity had been triggered in him was out of balance, and the bee sting as an antagonist knocked it back again.
The action may be agonistic, but most of the substances chemists classify as poisons seem to have antagonistic action.
Coniine paralyzes muscles by blocking [Coniine is a poisonous alkaloid found in poison hemlock (Conium maculatum) and the yellow pitcher plant (Sarracenia flava)] - it is an antagonist - and causes 'a flaccid paralysis'. Symptoms of paralysis occur within a half hour, and death may take several hours. But let us imagine a case where through imbalance our muscles were twitching beyond control, as they do in Parkinson’s disease for example. Again, a tiny tiny dose of Coniine might help.
Strychnine is also an antagonist [Strychnine was the first alkaloid to be identified in plants of the genus Strychnos, family Loganiaceae.]. It is a killer at certain doses but in very low doses, it was once prescribed for hypotension.
It has also been misused as a stimulant, but rarely successfully. Strychnine made headlines back in 1904 during the St. Louis Olympics. At that time there were no rules about the use of performance enhancing drugs. British athlete Thomas Hicks won the gold medal but not without a little help. About 10 miles from the finish line Hicks begged his trainers to let him stop running and give-up the race. His trainers refused and gave him a dose of strychnine as a stimulant to keep him going. They also gave him raw egg-white and brandy. As a result Hicks had to be carried across the finish line and it took four doctors to revive him so that he could leave the stadium. So the dose wasn't right but the principle may [big may] have been sound.
So not all substances classified as poisons are necessarily always poisonous – the dose is key. Many chemicals have a use if the system is out of balance in specific ways.
Poisons and drugs
A homeopathic doctor or practitioner does not prescribe a course of medicines for months on end. A small dose is given with a potency that appears to equal the intensity of the function that is not in balance. If this does not work, the function is monitored and another small dose is given. If it works then no more of the medicine is given.
I hope you can see that this is infinitely more logical and sensible [and cheaper] than prescribing pharmaceutical drugs for the rest of a person’s life.
All that long courses of pharmaceuticals do is kill off the receptors they act on. The body naturally adjusts to a steady intake of a substance and tries to balance itself. If you flood it with dopamine on a regular basis it reduces the number of dopamine receptors, if you flood it with cannabinoids it reduces the number of cannabinoid receptors, if you flood it with opioids it reduces the number of opioid receptors. All this means is that if you then stop flooding it, you suffer horrendous - truly horrendous - withdrawal symptoms from which you may never recover. The body may not be able to bring you back to the state you were in before you abused it and recover all the receptors you used to have.
If you have been given or taken opioids for example, and stop taking them, it means that if you do need endorphins because of pain, there will not be enough receptors to give you pain relief. You will suffer inordinate pain. Howard Hughes found that out.
Take someone off a beta blocker and you could kill them simply because their whole system will have adjusted to them and by removing the drug they will live in a state of permanent flight or fight and thus total exhaustion.
Dose and types of experience
If you overdose on anything then there is a sort of sliding scale of experiences that occur from the overdose. We can overdose on our own chemicals and there are plenty of examples of this in the events section of this overload section.
What I think we need to realise is that all the ‘spiritual experiences’ I have provided on the website which are the product of overload are, in a sense, caused by poisoning. Adrenaline poisoning, glucose poisoning, dopamine poisoning, calcium poisoning, magnesium poisoning, and so on.
Poisoning eventually results in death, but it may cause death in stages. The stages of the near death experience, for example, can start with hallucinations, then out of body and finally you are off down the tunnel on your way to meet your Higher spirit and you don’t come back [unless the doctors manage to save you].
If you are lucky you will get a near death experience, [you recover] if you are not it will be an actual death experience.
Whatever drug you take, endogenous, exogenous, natural or unnatural, if you get hallucinations or out of body or similar you are overdosing because it is only via overdose that these sorts of experience manifest.
Nobody in their right mind knowing the facts, would voluntarily go this route, but it can be an accidental mechanism.
The dangers of the Internet
In the mad scramble the young, adventurous, curious and so on have for wanting to know what a 'spiritual experience' is like, the Internet is often turned to for advice on what to do. Many people equate spiritual experience with hallucinations and only hallucinations, and thus search the Internet for 'hallucinogens'.
It is a very dangerous step to take.
I have come across references in books and web sites calling some substances ‘hallucinogens’, simply because at poison doses they produce hallucinations.
It is noticeable that the people who describe these so called 'hallucinogens', have no first hand experience of their effects, they are describing things ‘people have heard via people who have heard who say they used them’ [so anecdote and not fact]. In this category of substances you have the ‘dream fishes’ and the ‘witch’s brews’, and the ‘hobbit pipes’. There is some very dangerous information on the Internet, but some of the books I have read are not entirely guilt free.
The weasel wording does not help. Some substances are given the name ‘deleriants’, they are called deleriants because they produce delirium, delirium is a condition experienced by the severely ill who are close to dying, it is often what happens slightly before you die. So deleriants give you ‘near death experiences’, these are likely to be ‘actual death’ experiences unless someone gets you to hospital fast.
Herbal teas, herbal mixtures and smoking mixtures
In the following list I have provided some descriptions of substances that have indeed produced spiritual experiences via poisoning.
My objective in providing this list is to warn people of the prevalence of some substances that are harmful at the doses supplied, but which are used in a whole host of freely available consumer products that appear perfectly ‘safe’ but which are not.
The list is by no means complete.
I also want to stop people being poisoned accidentally by being told by people of dubious intellect and a rather wicked disposition, that they are ‘hallucinogenic’ or 'herbal' or 'smoking mixtures' or 'gentle essential oils' which can do you no harm - when they are not – at the dose received they are poisonous. It needs to be remembered that many people who tell you that these plants and substances are ‘hallucinogenic’ or OK have brain damage caused by these substances and are in no fit state to advise anyone.
The detailed description of the substance can be accessed in the scientific section via the links I have provided:
-
- sweet clover
- tonka bean (Dipteryx odorata)
- vanilla grass (Anthoxanthum odoratum)
- sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum)
- mullein (Verbascum spp.)
- cassia cinnamon (Cinnamomum aromaticum)
- melilot (Melilotus ssp.), or
- Deers Tongue (Panicum clandestinum)
- Carrot seeds
- Dicoumarol poisoning – Dicoumarol is found in a number of smoking mixtures using the plants containing coumarin above that either require you to ferment the leaves and flowers first over quite a period of time or have been prefermented
- Safrole poisoning – Safrole is found in overdose proportions in smoking mixtures or essential oils or herbal incense mixtures that contain
- Sweet flag
- Sassafras
- Ylang-ylang
- Camphor tree leaves and roots
- Star anise, star aniseed, or Chinese star anise
- Nutmeg
- Pepper, in smoking blends sometimes called ‘herbal ecstasy’
- Cloves
- Laurel and myrtle
- Furanocoumarins have been found in smoking mixtures and herbal incense mixtures often by the accidental inclusion of 'look alike' plants such as
- wild parsnip or
- Giant Hogweed.
- Grayanotoxin poisoning – Grayanotoxin is to be found in a number of products sold as so called ‘hobbit’s pipes’, made from the stems and branches of rhododendrons and other plants of the family Ericaceae.
- Cytisine poisoning - Cytisine has been found as an ingredient in a number of herbal teas, smoking mixtures, essential oils and herbal incense mixtures that contained plants of the Faboideae subfamily, including
- Laburnum
- Anagyri
- Thermopsi
- Cytisus
- Genista
- Sophora
- It is also present in Gymnocladus of the Caesalpinioideae subfamily.
- Mamane (Sophora chrysophylla)
- Digoxin - is a cardiac glycoside and extracted from the foxglove plant, Digitalis lanata. The natural chemical is called digitoxin. The drug is described separately under pharmaceuticals, but the effects are the same. It has been found in herbal mixtures claiming to help with heart failure.
- Strychnine - added to some herbal teas, smoking mixtures and herbal incense mixtures as a stimulant in the form of the seeds or bark of the Strychnos nux vomica tree, or other plants of the genus Strychnos, family Loganiaceae. [The genus contains 196 species].
How it works
You need to have the Model of the Mind open and have read How spiritual experence works.
Any substance that enters our bodies is assessed for whether it is a help or a threat. When any substance enters via whatever route – by mouth, by wounds, by injection, by inhalation, by smoking or snuffing or smearing on our skin as an ointment and thus absorption via the skin, the body’s defence mechanism checks to see what it is and whether it is friend or foe.
At too high a level, at levels where cell destruction can take place and the body itself is at risk, the cells send out a message to the Will via the nervous system which says HELP HELP HELP THREAT THREAT THREAT we are being attacked we are dying DO SOMETHING.
The Will responds by mobilising its defence systems – immune system, the system of the kidneys and liver which act as filters, the stomach with the acid, the blood filtering system and so on. But at overdose levels the defence systems may be overwhelmed and the messages keep on coming in.
HELP, HELP, HELP, THREAT, THREAT, THREAT, we are being attacked, we are dying DO SOMETHING.
The Will can do no more from a defensive point of view, but it is able to release messages which help to ease the pain and this it does. Thus we get endorphins, for example, being released, which give pain relief and start to shut down functions we no longer have need of because the energy is better targeted to survival.
The presence of all these neurotransmitters is a sure sign of overdose. We don’t get a spiritual experience via neurotransmitters – neurotransmitters like these are just indicators that the body is trying to ease the pain and suffering from the damage it is experiencing.
At this point we might start to get hallucinations as the non essential functions of Memory and Learning are gradually shut down.
But if the overdose is severe and the messages continue HELP, HELP, HELP, THREAT, THREAT, THREAT, we are being attacked, we are dying DO SOMETHING. the Will takes some very drastic action and mobilises all its energy and defenses into the autonomic system.
Now comes some serious activity when we can go out of body, because the Reasoning system Memory and Learning system have all been shut down and we are in effect on automatic pilot – we have gone AWOL.
Unless the autonomic systems can handle the threat, from this point on we are dying.
Death is thus the termination of the biological functions that sustain a living organism and death by poisoning can produce some very profound experiences, simply because function elimination is so very complete.
At the stage where death is inevitable what is going on is a form of controlled shut down of practically all the functions of the mind.
The function of the ‘will’ continues to manage the autonomic systems, but consciousness may be transferred from the Personality to the Higher spirit. The person is actually perceiving as the spirit from that point on.
The perception function and the perceptions go with the Higher Spirit, but all functions relating to the body are gradually shut down in a controlled way by the Will. The last function to be extinguished is the will itself and the will does not extinguish itself until metaphorically speaking the cord has been cut – the person has crossed the bridge or the stream or whatever is metaphorically shown as the divide between life and death.
Once the cord has been cut, the function of will shuts itself off. And you die.
As the perceptions go with the Higher Spirit, the Spirit takes over the process that was formerly the will, the software that controls 'seeing' and 'hearing' have no need to go with the composer because within the spiritual world perception is pure perception unfettered by the software needed to process the input from the 5 senses.
Human emotions stay behind and cease, but the divine emotions suddenly become apparent to the person – they experience – perhaps for the first time what divine love is.
Memory stays with the body and dies. All nervous sensation software/function stays with the body and dies. Reasoning dies, learning dies.
The adapted model is shown below.
Observations
I haven’t gone overboard here, Pubmed has lots more examples of accidentals poisonings from all these substances and I have provided a number of examples within the heading of specific substances.
