Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

The Scroll of Deeds - The Quran calls the perception log a ‘scroll of deeds’.  The definition of the Scroll of Deeds is identical to that we have on the site for the Perceptions - all good and bad deeds, words, beliefs, actions etc of the person are recorded – a complete and accurate record of everything that happened during the person’s life.  The major difference is that the Quran specifies that each person has a helper or series of helpers appointed to him that do the recording.  In some translations these helpers are called angels in others they are called guardians and in yet others they are the legendary ‘Watchers’
82:10) Yet over you there are watchers.

Judgement - The next stage is then judgement, which occurs after death.  The record is displayed.  There are ‘good’ deeds and ‘bad’ deeds, and the definition of good and bad is not provided in the Quran – the definition is that of the judge or judges  – not any man.  Thus, although imams have the obvious tendency to add their own definitions according to what they want to achieve, the Quran specifically states that all judgement is based on the judges’ decision and assessment.  But there is great emphasis in the text on the fact that “your Lord does not deal unjustly with anyone “ and that compassion is used.

Good and bad, Destiny and the Great Work - One intriguing aspect found in the Quran, is that when judged, the Great Work and our part in it, will be revealed and we will at last understand in full what our destiny was and why things happened the way they did.  Hence the emphasis upon justice and compassion, for without knowing the entire context of the plan we may not have realised that what we perceived as ‘good’ was actually not helpful in the scheme of things; and what we thought of as ‘bad’ was part of the plan.  Ultimately it seems the greatest ‘punishment’ is meted out to those who cut themselves off spiritually and thus did not obey orders. “they who have made their souls suffer loss because they disbelieved in Our communications

The verdict and final separation – once the judgement has taken place, the souls are separated into three.  There are three paths that all Mystics believe exist on death.

  • The ‘left hand’ is symbolically the blue route to the symbolic Moon.  At one time, all belief systems stated that this led to reincarnation back on earth but this appears to have been replaced in Islamic thought by Hell.  Some people might say that given our behaviour they are one and the same thing!
  • The ‘right hand’ is the symbolic red route to the symbolic Sun, with no reincarnation.  The Q’ran expands on this by indicating that this is where paradise is – the garden of Eden
  • But there is a third route, the path to the Stars - the symbolic Milky Way, a path not only of no reincarnation, but a path that takes you much nearer the 'centre', the unmoving mover.  As the Q’ran says “And the foremost are the foremost. These are they who are drawn nigh (to Allah)

A description of the experience

The Scroll of Deeds:

And most surely there are keepers over you. Honorable recorders, they know what you do. (82:10-12)

Judgement

And We have made every man’s actions to cling to his neck, and We will bring forth to him on the resurrection day a book which he will find wide open: Read your book; your own self is sufficient as a reckoner against you this day. (17:13-14)

On the day that every soul shall find present what it has done of good and what it has done of evil, it shall wish that between it and that (evil) there were a long duration of time; and Allah makes you to be cautious of (retribution from) Himself; and Allah is Compassionate to the servants. (3:30)

And the Book shall be placed, then you will see the guilty fearing from what is in it, and they will say: Ah! woe to us! what a book is this! it does not omit a small one nor a great one, but numbers them (all); and what they had done they shall find present (there); and your Lord does not deal unjustly with anyone. (18:49)

Destiny and the Great Work

On the day when hidden things shall be made manifest. (86:9)

And the measuring out on that day will be just; then as for him whose measure (of good deeds) is heavy, those are they who shall be successful. And as for him whose measure (of good deeds) is light, those are they who have made their souls suffer loss because they disbelieved in Our communications. (7:8-9)

Separation

And you shall be three sorts. Then (as to) the companions of the right hand; how happy are the companions of the right hand! And (as to) the companions of the left hand; how wretched are the companions of the left hand! And the foremost are the foremost. These are they who are drawn nigh (to Allah). (56:7-11)

And at the time when the hour shall come, at that time they shall become separated one from the other. Then as to those who believed and did good, they shall be made happy in a garden. (30:14-15)
