Rubens - Drunken Silenus

Identifier

010582

Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

There are signs of collaboration in both these paintings with some large buxom nudes, particularly the lady in the foreground, who have all the Rubens attributes, then there are some figures that share all the qualities and painterly style of the Two Satyrs, which makes one conjecture that this was also a partial Van Dyck painting. See Observation 008071 for more details.

Although the painting makes Silenus appear literally drunk, the fact Silenus was drunk on wine was symbolic, see wine.  A master magician.
