Symbols - What does heaven look like
Smoke
Smoke and smoke rings are figuratively like steam or water vapour rising and thus are symbolically used to represent Spirit Output. The rings are like the levels and layers in the Egg so in effect thoughts are rising symbollicaly through the layers.
Mircea Eliade – Shamanism Archaic techniques of ecstasy
Only one document appears to indicate the existence of a Getic shamanism; it is Strabo’s account of the Mysian kapnobatai, a name that has been translated by analogy with Aristophanes aerobates as ‘those who walk in the clouds’; but which should be translated as ‘those who walk in the smoke’.
Sources: Herodotus, J Colman Zalmoxis, and Vasile Parvan – Getica O protohistoire a Daciei
There is an added meaning to the symbolism however in connection with 'Purgatory'. If one has been or is even going through this process, then the 'dross' that is burnt away - is often symbolically referred to as smoke. Do not be put off by the name purgatory - it is not as the religions have often portrayed it, it is a process whereby analogously your soul software is put through an anti-virus checker and remover, and a process where your registry is checked to make sure you are all organised properly and your software hasn't become fragmented and corrupted.
