Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa – Zulu Shaman [Dreams, Prophecies and Mysteries]

We believe that the soul is sensitive to projections of evil, or to possession by evil spirits.  As a sangoma I have participated in many expulsions of evil spirits from people; and I tell you I still don't like it.  There was a man who had a very peculiar and evil habit; he had been arrested for mauling children by chewing on their hands.  In several cases he had quite badly hurt the children by this peculiar thing, trying to eat their hands, as it were.  I was called in to work with this person, along with other sangomas.

We discovered that he was possessed by one of his own ancestors, a cannibal spirit from several generations back.  It was this wicked creature that was causing all the problems, because he desired still to feast on human flesh.  Seven sangomas and I did a ceremony.  We built fires around and we brought the ancestor forth so we could see who was there, and then we expelled him.  A dark cloud and a terrible stink came forth from the man and we sent him on his way, and after that the man was quite normal.
