The Link – Matthew Manning
What of the contents and subjects of my automatic drawings?
Perhaps surprisingly, there are very few religious drawings among them. In fact, the only religious picture that I have produced, is a head of Christ purportedly by Leonardo da Vinci. Most drawings are of people, birds and animals; very few are of buildings.
Under the initials of Albrecht Durer I produced a series of portraits, all of which are named after the- subject. The names include "Matthaus Lang von Wellenburg", "Bilibaldi Pirkeymheri", "Hans Tucher", "Lucas van Leydon", and "Ulrich Stark". None of these names with the exception of Lucas van Leydon, the engraver (contemporary of Durer) were known to me. However, little research was needed to discover that Rilibaldi Pirkeymheri was a close friend and patron of Durer.
I am sure that not all of these are originals; many of them are different versions or reproductions of previous works by the artist.
However, there is still the question of how these pictures get through my hand onto the paper. I have never seen these pictures before, and I have really no ability at all to draw myself.
