A Dictionary of Symbols – J E Cirlot
The deepest and most ancient meaning of the myth of the giant alludes to the supposed existence of an immense primordial being, by whose sacrifice creation was brought forth. The cosmogonic myth was very common among primitive and ancient peoples, and it shows how rites involving the sacrifice of humans are an attempt to revive the initial sacrifice and to resuscitate the cosmic forces or to awaken at least, their favourable proclivities.
