Introduction and description

Annona squamosa is a small, well-branched tree or shrub from the family Annonaceae that bears edible fruits called sugar-apples. The common name of the plant is sweetsop, reflecting thesweetness of the fruit. The fruit of A. squamosa (sugar-apple) has delicious whitish pulp, and is popular in tropical markets.
Annona squamosa tolerates a tropical lowland climate better than its relatives Annona reticulata- also on the site - whose common name is Custard apple, Annona cherimola [also called, rather confusingly, the custard apple but referred to on the site as Cherimoya] or the Soursop - the fruit of Annona muricata.
