Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
The Hypnerotomachia Poliphili was written by Francesco Colonna, a Dominican friar in the 16th century. The book describes the allegorical journey of the spiritual traveller and in the course of the book just about every symbolic spiritual feature is incorporated into the story.
Poliphili, the hero of the story, is attempting a journey to heaven in his dream in order to find Polia, superficially the lady he loves but at a deeper level his Higher spirit.
One of the features he has to traverse is a sea to get to the ‘heavenly isles’ in this case the heavenly isle of venus the goddess of love and he is taken there in a boat skippered by cupid and rowed by nymphs.
