Antonio Damasio – The Feeling of What Happens
Quite candidly, the first problem of consciousness is the problem of how we get a ‘movie-in-the-brain’, provided we realise that in this rough metaphor the movie has as many sensory tracks as our nervous system has sensory portals – sight, sound, taste and olfaction, touch, inner senses and so on..................
The records we hold of the objects and events that we once perceived include the motor adjustments we made to obtain the perception in the first place and also include the emotional reactions we had then…. Consequently, even when we merely think about an object, we tend to reconstruct memories not just of a shape or colour but also of the perceptual engagement the object required and of the accompanying emotional reactions, regardless of how slight.
