The spiral can be found in three main forms:

  • Expanding as in the nebula – an active sun-symbol
  • Contracting like the whirlwind or whirlpool – a  negative moon symbol
  • Or ossified like the snail’s shell – also a negative moon symbol

Furthermore,

  • The creative spiral rises in a clockwise direction and is an attribute of Pallas Athene
  • The destructive spiral like a whirlwind twirls round to the left and is an attribute of Poseidon
