Background

A description of the experience

Ernesto Bozzano - Psychic phenomena at the moment of death [110 cases suggesting survival after death]

7-th case. - In my book Les Phénomènes de Hantise ("The Phenomena of Haunting", Chap. III, pages 86-92) I quoted a very interesting case that I had extracted from Proceedings of the S.P.R. (Vol. III, page 126), in which a group of children, with their parents, saw the ghost of a little old woman coming and going in the house. There were also sounds and noises of all kinds, including a woman's voice singing a very sad song.  Mrs. Vata-Simpson reports:

Besides the ghost of the frail old lady, who used to circulate on the upper floor, and another ghost of a man who appeared on the stairs, we have various visions, and we heard sounds and noises of all kinds. Very often in the kitchen we heard emotional sounds of new-born babies, and we heard them the same day we entered the house. But that time none of us doubted that it was an authentic new-born, assuming the sounds came from a nearby house. But as the sounds repeated and perpetuated themselves without ever changing their tone, we were soon surprised, then did research, until we convinced ourselves that they did not come from a living new-born.

Moreover, in the corner near the door of my room, the sounds of an extremely melancholic song could be heard, and they were real, very smooth and penetrating notes. However, there was a moment when the last notes extended and gradually turned into desperate screams of agony. After that, there was silence. And all these sounds and noises occurred close to some bulkhead between rooms and never close to the supporting walls or outside walls of the house.

This account does not contain information or histories of dramatic events in connection with the haunting; but as the reporter says that the house was very old and had a reputation for being haunted, one should argue that the lack of information on this subject is explained by the very age of the building and by the intermittency of the haunting - circumstances which probably led to the causes being forgotten.

In any case, the comparative analysis of the phenomena of haunting, such as it has been exposed in the quoted work, leads us to suppose that the phenomenon of the painful wailings of the newborn, combined with the so sad singing of a woman's voice, have their origin in a blood drama which would have occurred within these walls... perhaps an infanticide made hidden.
