Introduction and description
Osteoporosis can be helped by a number of relatively simple measures, and many of those relate to finding the cause of the problem, follow the link to get more details of the causes of osteoporosis and how it can be helped.
But the current medical practise, being symptom and not cause based, uses a number of pharmaceutical treatments for osteoporosis including
- Vitamin supplements
- Mineral supplements and
- Bisphosphonates
Bisphosphonates (also called diphosphonates) are the most commonly prescribed drugs used to treat osteoporosis. Bisphosphonates are also used to both prevent and treat, osteitis deformans ("Paget's disease of bone"), bone metastasis (with or without hypercalcaemia), multiple myeloma, primary hyperparathyroidism, osteogenesis imperfecta, fibrous dysplasia, and other conditions that feature bone fragility.
The theory behind them is based on the fact that bone undergoes constant turnover and is kept in balance (homeostasis) by osteoblasts creating bone and osteoclasts destroying bone. Bisphosphonates' inhibit the digestion of bone by encouraging osteoclasts to undergo apoptosis, or cell death, thereby slowing bone loss'.
Unfortunately this blanket approach to osteoporosis rather ignores its cause. It is a very limited symptom based approach.
Side-Effects
Oral bisphosphonates can cause a range of side-effects including
- Stomach disease - upset stomach and inflammation and erosions of the esophagus, fever and flu-like symptoms
- ONJ - Bisphosphonates, when administered intravenously for the treatment of cancer, have been associated with osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), with the mandible twice as frequently affected as the maxilla
- Pain - A number of cases of severe bone, joint, or musculoskeletal pain have been reported, 'prompting labeling changes'
- Atrial fibrillation - Recent studies have reported bisphosphonate use as a risk factor for atrial fibrillation in women. ‘The inflammatory response to bisphosphonates or fluctuations in calcium blood levels have been suggested as possible mechanisms’. One study estimated that 3% of atrial fibrillation cases might have been due to alendronate use.
- Broken bones - In large studies, women taking bisphosphonates for osteoporosis have had unusual fractures ("bisphosphonate fractures") in the femur (thigh bone) in the of the bone, rather than at the head of the bone, which is the most common site of fracture. ‘There are concerns that long-term bisphosphonate use can result in over-suppression of bone turnover’. It is hypothesized that micro-cracks in the bone are unable to heal and eventually unite and propagate, resulting in atypical fractures. Such fractures tend to heal poorly and often require some form of bone stimulation, for example bone grafting as a secondary procedure.
- Cancer - A 2010 study suggests that the risk of oesophageal cancer increased with 10 or more prescriptions for oral bisphosphonates and with prescriptions over about a five-year period. In Europe and North America, the incidence of oesophageal cancer at age 60–79 is typically 1 per 1000 population over five years, and this is estimated to increase to about 2 per 1000 with five years' use of oral bisphosphonates.
Taking one example drug - Fosmax, and using the figures from eHealthme, the most common Fosamax side effects are:
- Femur Fracture (13,708 reports)
- Fall (9,950 reports)
- Aseptic Necrosis (9,104 reports)

- Depression (6,638 reports)
- Joint Pain (6,233 reports)
- Osteoarthritis (6,175 reports)
- Low Turnover Osteopathy (5,531 reports)
- Back Pain (5,231 reports)

How it works
All the spiritual experiences for this pharmaceutical are hallucinations or similar [visons, near death etc], as such we can trace this either to overdose and poisoning or via the side-effects they produce - in effect it was the illnesses they caused, that caused the hallucinations.
Both ONJ and fractures cause pain thus this must be a high contributor.
Observations
