Poems of Tulsidas - translated by Professor John Stratton Hawley
It is said in ancient writings-
And the evidence is seen in the world-
That whatever is good rejoices
because of the name of Ram.
Those who die in Benares
Are taught this by Lord Siva,
Who looked at countless ways of faith
and rejected everything else.
Because of Ram's name, that gracious food,
Those who craved even the water
Left over from butter now spurn
the cream of fragrant milk.
One hears that the reign of Ram
Is a time of proper rule
When, by your name, O Ram, the currency
could be leather hides.
