Type of Spiritual Experience
Background
Unbelievable, wonderful! He must have enjoyed himself hugely over this extract. It made me wonder whether he listed all the symbols and then used a selection each time and tried to find a way of incorporating them in an entertaining paragraph.
Painting with words.
A description of the experience
Hypnerotomachia Poliphili [The Strife of Love in a Dream] - Francesco Colonna translated by Joscelyn Godwin
Phoebus was emerging from the ocean waves, at the hour when Leucothea’s brow grows bright. The whirling wheels slung beneath his chariot were still out of sight as he appeared dutifully with his flying horses, first Pyrois, then Eous, to tint his daughter’s pale quadriga with scarlet roses and to speed after it without delay. His curling hair was already sending its rays scintillating over the restless blue waves. As he arrived at this point, hornless Cynthia was setting opposite, urging on the steeds of her vehicle which was drawn by a white and dark mule. She reached the far horizon separating the hemispheres and gave way, fleeing from the first star that heralds the day
