Background

A description of the experience

Korean Shamanism – Muism – Dr Kim Tae-kon

From the perspective of their form, the gods of Muism can be thought of both as polytheistic (the belief that there is more than one god) and animistic (the attribution of conscious life to nature or natural objects).

Objects of belief in the divine are generally classified into two groups: gods stemming from nature and gods stemming from human beings, both of which have human characteristics. The gods in Muism always become objects to fear, because they deliver their messages (and demonstrate their power) through frightening and painful punishment, rather than through some reasonable revelation to humanity.
