Being shipwrecked

Category: Events

Type

Involuntary

Introduction and description

Ships, yachts, liners, cargo carrying boats and so on at sea may be sunk or beached and the survivors forced to abandon ship in life rafts or lifeboats or whatever is available that floats.   The chances that they will survive are remote, the survivor has to face lack of food, lack of water, fear, and sleep deprivation.

Mental exhaustion and sleep deprivation cause spiritual experiences ranging from hallucinations to visions, even out of body experiences.

How it works

A large number of different mechanisms contribute to the hallucinations, visions, out of body experiences and other experiences people who have been shipwrecked get.

Sleep deprivation adversely affect the brain and cognitive function.

The very nature of the sea has a befuddling effect.

The survivors may suffer from dehydration, and food shortages [nutritional deprivation].

The wind and the waves can produce infrasound [low frequency sound] which acts via low intensity resonance to induce experiences in some people.

The emotional overload caused by fear  - overwhelming fear and terror  - also works on the functions of reason and memory.

They may suffer from the cold and wet - hypothermia
