Background
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a medical condition characterised by chronic widespread pain and a heightened and painful response to pressure. Symptoms other than pain may occur, leading to the use of the term fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Other symptoms include feeling tired to a degree that normal activities are affected, sleep disturbance, and joint stiffness
A description of the experience
Xyrem
Xyrem is also called Alcover and sodium oxybate, Xyrem is superficially a prescription medication for the treatment of narcolepsy. Xyrem is also used in Italy for treatment of alcohol withdrawal and dependence and is being trialled for fibromyalgia. It is also being considered for “Parkinson's disease, chronic fatigue syndrome (ME), schizophrenia, binge eating, essential tremor, and other non-Parkinson's movement disorders and chronic cluster headache”.
The active ingredient of Xytrem is GHB – I have given it its own separate section.
“A recent analysis evaluated the postmarketing safety of Xyrem (Wang et al. 2009), including cases reported to the manufacture from market introduction in 2002 through March 2008, found 2 confirmed cases (0.008%) of sodium oxybate–facilitated sexual assault; and 21 deaths (0.08%) in patients receiving sodium oxybate treatment. In the US, Xyrem is classified as a Schedule III controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act, with illicit use subject to Schedule I penalties”.
Enough said.
On Jan, 17, 2017 26,561 people reported to have side effects when taking Xyrem.
Among them, 300 people (1.13%) have Hallucination
On Dec, 23, 2016 26,561 people reported to have side effects when taking Xyrem.
