Water is essentially feminine, a mother figure. All our best loved heroes emerge from it as though they came from the uterus of earth. Their parents are usually nameless and they rise from river or sea like the sun, representing humanity at large.
Sargon the founder of Babylon, is rescued from the reeds by Akki, ‘the water carrier’. Karna, the focus of an ancient Indian epic, is discovered floating on the Ganges. Each is abandoned, exposed, as Noah and his family are, to the hazards of flood. The ark is even described in the Old testament by the same word tebah as that used for the basket in which Moses, whose name means the ‘water-drawer’, is found in the Nile
