Background

From the guide books

"Uxmal was founded by a tribe from Peten in Guetemala about AD550, but it is possible the site was occupied earlier.  Its name means 'thrice built'.  The finest buildings were constructed during the 9th century and the 10th century AD during which period the city was bitter enemies with Chichen Itza.  There is a classic Maya purity about the ruins and an unequalled diversity and style of architecture can be seen here, notably in the successive stages of the Pyramid of the Magician.  The city was abandoned in AD 1000 and remained unoccupied for 200 years, after which the Xiu moved in.  In time, they too abandonned Uxmal and moved to a smaller village in 1450.  Careful restoration has made Uxmal one of the most rewarding sites to visit in the region"
