Poems of Tulsidas - translated by Professor John Stratton Hawley
Oh Siva, great giver,
great god of great simplicity,
You have sent away the sadness
of all who join their hands in prayer:
They serve and remember and worship you
with a little rice, a few leaves,
But you have given the world horses and chariots,
elephants-whatever pleases.
Oh left-handed god, while living in your town
I haven't asked for a thing
But now your servants, these earthly trials,
have come to block my path.
Quick, I beg you, speak:
Restrain the evil actions
Of those scoundrels who'd surround
this Tulsi tree with trees of thorns.
