A description of the experience

Alain Danielou – Gods of Love and Ecstasy: The traditions of Shiva and Dionysus

It appears that, in the most ancient form of the rites of Shiva-Dionysus, the cult-centre was a place under the open sky called "the dance floor". This sacred enclosure stood for the temple and was the god's sanctuary, as is still the case among the primitive tribes of India, in the ancient Tamil epic, the Shilappadikaram, the dance floor is described as the village sanctuary, where contact can be made with the mysterious world of spirits.
