The Jacques Romano Story – Dr Berthold Eric Schwartz
"In Santos, Brazil, about 1905, I was sleeping in a hotel room but I was very restless. This was unusual for me, but everything has a cause and effect. It had been my custom always to visit an apartment or a house for a close friend before he would rent it. If the place was happy it permeated the walls; if it had held bitterness, I could quickly feel it. Anyway, in the Santos Hotel I went downstairs, talked to the clerk, and asked him, 'How is the smallpox around here?' He said, 'Oh, it's not too bad, but three weeks ago the man who was staying in your room died of it.' "
