Nizami – Makhzanol Asrar (The Treasury of Mysteries) – extract from In praise of King Fakhrod-Din
I, who in this circle which goes round the world
am tied to the city like the centre of a point
Have no opportunity to stretch my limbs in comfort.
I have the shadow but not the glory of the Phoenix.
My foot is sunk deep in the mire;
my hand is on the saddle-strap of heaven
I lowered the crown of my head to beneath my feet,
and I made a footstep of my kneecap
The mirror of my heart on my kneecap
has become the great brightness of my face
