Critique of Pure Reason – Transcendental Doctrine of Elements: Transcendental Logic
Every action, as an appearance, insofar as it produces an event, is itself an event, presupposing another state, in which its cause can be found; and thus everything that happens is only a continuation of the series, and no beginning that happens of itself is possible in it. Actions of natural causes in the succession of time are therefore themselves again effects, which likewise presuppose causes in the series of time. An original action, by which something takes place that did not exist before, cannot be expected from the causal connection of appearances.
