CREATION BY NIGHT
The glow-worm crying in the night
Against the uncreated dark
Must, from intensity of love,
Create a detailed world of light.
Against its radiant spears, the dark
Thrusts back with spears of ebony;
Hollowed and bound, a creature world
Within the light, within the dark.
This clumsy dore that stumbles by;
Clasped buds, a groined and fissured leaf;
Here, still as painted hands that pray,
Asleep in grass, a butterfly.
Ever the worm with passionate light
Combats the passion of the dark;
As fainting echoes far away
Star beyond star assaults the night.
