A description of the experience

June 23rd

There is a lovely old tree in uncle John's garden, and to-day I sat a long time watching a funny old gnome who lives inside it, like one of the gnomes in my fairy-tale book. He has great long thin legs and wears a red cap, though the rest of him is like the colour of the trunk of the tree. Sometimes he comes out of his tree and goes prancing about in the grass and looking so funny that I want to giggle, but was afraid I might make him offended. When I spoke about the old gnome to Basil, he poked fun at me, and said there were no such things, and  I was a little ass to believe such fiddlesticks. I can't make it out, and wished I knew what ails everybody.

June 24th

Today I asked old James, the gardener, about the gnome. And he said, " Well, master, if I was your age there’s no telling what I'd see, but I'm getting old, and my eyes aren't what they used to be."
