Dexamethasone – also known as Decadron

Dexamethasone is a potent synthetic member of the glucocorticoid class of steroid drugs. It acts as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant. It is 20 to 30 times more potent than the naturally occurring hormone cortisol and 4 to 5 times more potent than prednisone

 It is used in the treatment of rheumatic problems, a number of skin diseases, severe allergies, asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease, croup, brain swelling, and along with antibiotics in tuberculosis, among others. It has been used in preterm labor.

The long term use of dexamethasone may result in thrush, bone loss, cataracts, easy bruising, or muscle weakness.

It is an immunosuppressant.
