Transcendental Music

23-rd case. - N. Spicer, in his book Strange Things (page 115), recounts the death of a brother of Dr. Kenealy in these terms:

The patient's room faced a vast expanse of countryside, surrounded by a crown of green hills. By noon, almost all members of the family, including the doctor, his brother, were gathered in the room, which was lit by a dazzling ray of sunlight. Suddenly, a divinely melodious song resounded in the room. It was far superior to any earthly song. It was a suave and melancholic complaint, due to a female voice. The accent expressed a depth of heart-breaking pain that could not be described in words. It continued for several minutes, after which it seemed to fade away, like the light waves that ripple a lake, losing itself in a whisper.

The agony of the child had begun at the same time as the singing; but the emotion evoked in the participants by this mysterious and divine song was such that their attention was diverted for a few moments from the solemn scene... When the last note of the song faded far, far away, the child's spirit was also exiled from the body.
