Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

Beethoven was a manic depressive and tended to have his bouts of mania whilst walking in the fresh air – woods fields and so on.  His Pastoral suite was composed after just such a walk………………….. he may have been deaf, but he heard music in his head

A description of the experience

Manic Depression and Creativity – D Jablow Hershman and Dr Julian Lieb

Manic euphoria sometimes generates mystic states in which the manic feels filled with love, at one with all creation and in touch with God.
Beethoven's woodland manias were sometimes of this kind.
He wrote in 1810, 'It seems as if in the country, every tree said to me Holy!  Holy!  Who can give complete expression to the ecstasy of the woods'?
It seems unlikely that one could achieve works of emotional range and intensity comparable to those of Beethoven without such extraordinary emotional experiences
