Background
The heart is the seat of the ego or Personality. To become a god - anniihilation - you have to metaphorically sacrifice or completely subdue 'kill off' your ego, thus on the platfom we see the two symbols of having achieved god like status - the jaguar and the eagle clutching human hearts.
Note that there is a considerable amount of rubbish written about the beliefs surrounding this temple - some guide books say it was a place of sacrifice to make the sun go round! But as the Popol Vuh amply demonstrates, the Sun was symbolic and the Mayans were a great deal more sophisticated than this
