Twice there appeared to my sight, though only momentarily, phantasms of great serpents; the first was coiled beneath a tree, and just beginning to move – it seemed fully as large as a python. The second was much larger, and of a cool metallic green, whereas the first had a reddish cast. These appearances conveyed a symbolic idea to me; the interpretation was as instantaneous as the vision. Yet as I could not at once believe that these glimpses were not shared by my companions, I was also under the belief that they too could read their meaning
