47 What is the meaning of the verse (Deuteronomy 4:12)
‘You saw no form only a voice’?
This was explained when Moses said to Israel (Deuteronomy 4:15) ‘You did not see an entire image’. You saw an image but not an ‘entire image’….
It is therefore written ‘You saw no form, only a voice’. It is also written (Deuteronomy 4:12) ‘A voice of words you heard’.
48. ……… At first they saw the voices. What did they see? The seven voices mentioned by David. But in the end they heard the word that emanated from them all.
But we have learned that there were ten
Our sages taught that they were all said with a single word.
But we have said that there were seven.
There were seven voices. Regarding three of them, it is written (Deuteronomy 4:12) ‘The voices of words you heard, but you saw no form, only a voice’. This teaches us that they were all said with a single word.
