Background
This observation was made when he was by the seaside and met a little girl called Marjorie, older than he was, who turned out to be a bit advanced for her age.
Author’s note later: Since my young days quite a number of reputable persons have written books testifying to the existence of little " nature spirits " known in folk lore as fairies, elves, gnomes, sylphs, etc. according to their particular function in the realm of Nature. The Irish poet W. B. Yeats, not only believes in fairies but apparently is able to see them.
The image was superimposed on the landscape.
A description of the experience
Mamma was very cross this afternoon because I went off to the shore by myself and didn’t wait for Marjorie. I was cross with Marjorie because she was always begging me to take down my pantaloons, I just told her I wanted to be by myself and watch the fairies playing among the stones and seaweed on the seashore - which was true.
And then she [his mother] got very vexed, and said she really didn't know what she was going to do with a little boy that was so untruthful, and that she wouldn't let me read any more fairy tales if I was going to say such naughty wicked things. And so I felt very cross with mamma, and nearly cried, because it wasn't fair of her to say I had been telling fibs when she hadn't been to the shore to see for herself. And I told her so, and she said I'd have to go to bed an hour earlier as a punishment for being forward. I can't make it out, and feel very wretched.
