The Art of Dying – Drs Peter and Elizabeth Fenwick
The contemporary accounts we have been given overwhelminglv describe collection by relatives of the dying. In our sample, from a more secular society, only 2 per cent of the ‘visitors' were religious figures, while 70 per cent were dead relatives or friends. In the remaining 28 per cent of cases, gestures of welcome or recognition were made by the dying person; but no words were spoken, so it is impossible to say exactly who or what they were actually seeing.
