The Peruvians think that all plants used as food are animated by a divine force which ensures their growth and fertility.........
The Indonesians have a spirit of rice, a power which makes their rice grow and bear fruit.... if the crop is withering, the karens of Burma believe that the soul (kelah) of the rice has departed from it and that the harvest is lost if they cannot bring it back.
The Minangkabauers of Sumatra think that the rice is guarded by a female spirit called Saning Sari, who is also called indoea padi (literally Mother of Rice)...... the Tomoris of the Celebes also have a Mother of Rice.
