Eriugena, Johannes Scotus - Peryphyseon – gods and divinity

Identifier

Type of Spiritual Experience

Background

Eriugena uses the term Christ to mean the archetypal perfect Higher spirit.  Thus through purification during the spiritual path one loses the dross and via annihilation becomes Higher spirit then you have become ‘Christ’.  Annihilation of course means you have become divine, a divinity.

A description of the experience

Periphyseon II 545a

For if Christ, who understands all things, who indeed is the understanding of all things, really unified all that He assumed, who doubts then that what first took place in the Head and principal Exemplar of the whole of human nature will eventually happen in the whole

The source of the experience

Eriugena, Johannes Scotus
