A description of the experience

Experiences of a Psychical researcher – Raymond Bayless

A very typical experience was encountered by my brother and me in the year 1938 when we were calling on a friend who lived on the ninth floor of the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Denver. It was twelve o'clock at night, but we found that our friend was not in his rooms.

Disappointed, we returned down a long, empty hallway, which culminated in an L turn, and waited for the self-service elevators. While we were expectantly standing by the elevator doors I suddenly heard my name, Raymond, called twice clearly in a strange, hissing whisper which sounded as though the word was said "in a steam jet."

Astonished, I turned to my brother and immediately noticed that he was "wearing" a most peculiar look. I asked him, "Did you hear that?" and he replied, "Yes, I did," or words to that effect.

The incident was curious and provided me with a marvellous example of that very familiar phenomenon of hearing one's name said in an apparently mysterious manner. Naturally, I am quite aware that this phenomenon is a very common experience, but in this case I was fortunate in that a witness was present, and with this corroboration its paranormality was satisfactorily established.
