Common steps and sub-activities

Reducing desires - look for hidden objectives

We may now know of some of our objectives, but there can also be hidden objectives of which we know nothing.  It is exceptionally important that we tease these out, because they can suddenly appear during spiritual experience to direct the will to do quite unwanted things.

During spiritual experience we can be particularly vulnerable, so if reason has been successfully squashed much of the decision making that goes on is made on the basis of what else is lingering in our minds.  If we have a hidden objective this might be the only input left and the will decides this is its chance.  It is why people jump out of windows in an attempt to fly when they have taken just a few too many drugs.  They have always had a lingering hidden wish to fly and without reason to guide them, that is what they do….. just the once, for a very short time.

Another way of finding out what your hidden objectives are is to put forward a number of unlikely scenarios to which you can react and from there you can continue to explore promising avenues.

Generally speaking hidden objectives are ones that under normal circumstances you would never be able to achieve.

“To win a million pounds on the roulette wheel”, or

“to tame wild elephants with only a feather duster”, or

“to run naked through the streets of London shouting ‘drinks on me’”.

All of which, if you have a spiritual experience and are not tied down, you may try to achieve, which might prove something of a shock to you afterwards and anyone caught up in the action.

Ask yourself what are your wildest dreams.  And what makes you say when you see someone on TV or in a film ‘Oh I’d love to be able to do that’.

Assess these for practicality and wisdom, pare them down
