A description of the experience

A Grain of Mustard – by Jeanne Gardner as told to Beatrice Moore

One incident I recall vividly had a somewhat humorous beginning. I had been told by some townspeople that there was a fortune-teller on Highway 33 who, when she had heard of my gift, was somewhat envious. She was determined to meet me, and I, not believing in fortune-telling as such, was equally determined not to meet her.

One afternoon a car pulled up in front of my house. I peered out the window and saw a woman, garishly dressed, wearing enormous bold, dark glasses. With her was a young, blond girl. I decided at first glance that the woman was the fortune-teller and that she was bringing the girl with her to take me off the track.

They rung the bell and I invited them inside. My first inclination was to expose the woman immediately, without even offering her a chance to introduce herself. But before I could speak, the girl extended her hand to me, and as I took it an entirely new world opened up.

I had been completely wrong.

I asked them both to be seated, and I began to speak without realizing what I was saying or why I was saying it. I told the girl about herself, about a deep-rooted problem she'd had that had resulted in a five-year stay in a mental institution. An ugly, recurring dream had broken the balance of this young person's mind. Even she was unable to explain what had driven her over the brink of normalcy. The girl's hand relaxed in mine as I spoke, and when I finished I turned to the older woman and identified her as a psychiatrist from our local hospital, calling her by name.

They were both flabbergasted.

Following this visit, we had a little tete-e-tete during which time the psychiatrist told me she had approached me with doubts, but that they had all been erased. She asked about my fee and seemed somewhat surprised that I would not accept money for my help. Had it not been for God's direction, I would be powerless, so in a sense, I was acting on His behalf, and all He ever asks in return is thanks and respect. The doctor and the patient left happy, with new hope ahead, and my day ended with deep appreciation of what I had accomplished.
