Symbols - What does heaven look like

Heel

Peter Paul Rubens - the goddess Thetis dipping
her son Achilles in the River Styx

The heel is symbolically a weak spot - an area of vulnerability – mentally or physically.  It is derived in part from Greek mythology, and the story of Achilles’ heel.

When Achilles was a baby, it was foretold that he would die young. To prevent his death, his mother Thetis took Achilles to the River Styx, which was supposed to offer powers of invulnerability, and dipped his body into the water; however, as Thetis held Achilles by the heel, his heel was not washed over by the water of the magical river. Achilles grew up to be a man of war who survived many great battles. One day, a poisonous arrow shot at him was lodged in his heel, killing him shortly afterwards.

In effect an Achilles' heel – and by derivation the symbolic heel -  is a weakness in spite of overall strength, which can lead to downfall. While the mythological origin refers to a physical vulnerability,  other attributes or qualities that can lead to downfall are common.

Interestingly the same symbolic use of the heel is to be found in the Bible.

Genesis 3:15 King James Version (KJV)

8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

9 Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?"

10 So he said, "I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself."

11 And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?" [note that this was an opportunity for repentance.]

12 Then the man said, "The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate."[Knows he has done wrong.  Blames the woman.  Blames God for giving him the woman, but does not accept any blame himself]

13 And the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."[which was true – because the feminine subconscious, without their masculine intellect are by nature innocent and trusting.  It was in fact the 'fault' of the masculine intellect]

14 So the LORD God said to the serpent: "Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. [although as we have seen recently, all creation falls under a curse because of man’s fall]

15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman [in other words if there is enmity between Satan and the woman, she is on the Light side – she becomes the feminine white force, he becomes the Dark side].  And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel."

So the forces of evil – the Dark side are opposed from two points of view.  They are opposed via the Higher spirit [the 'head'], which might be thought of as  any spiritual experience which serves to badger them with a conscience, and they are opposed via whatever Achilles heel can be found by the feminine – the forces of Light.

It then goes on to say [using the correct translation], for the woman "A snare hath increased your sorrow and your sighing."  So the innocent fell into the trap, and as a consequence,  life gets harder.  And In pain and sorrow you shall bring forth children.  This is not referring to childbirth, but the sorrow they will feel for their children in this new realm of separated forces – forces which will inevitably result in the death of their children.   There is also the prediction that women will make the mistake of turning to or reaching out after their husbands/the masculine instead of the spiritual and when they do the husbands will end up ruling over them.  The Intellect becomes the king.

By implication, the Dark forces - the masculine, will be dominant, but the intention is that they will need to be kept in check by the feminine forces of Light keeping an eye out the whole time for the weak areas in their armour - their Achilles heels;  and the spiritual realm via the Higher spirit.
