Animism, that oldest of religions, suggests that all objects have two aspects. One is external and objective, ‘real’, in the sense that it can be perceived by the usual senses. The other is imperceptible, except perhaps to gifted individuals. And the assumption is that manipulation and control of the world depends primarily on our ability to influence the second aspect, the animus – that imperceptible phase of reality.
