Background
A description of the experience
THE CHESS-PARTY
Now the sharp shower of evening stops ;
Now the cicadas make no sound.
The summer-house is jewelled round
With loosening golden drops.
Now, too, the players one by one
Have wandeied home. Behind the hill,
Mighty and growing mightier still
Falls the revolving sun.
Within, set out as if for play,
The chessmen stand. A low last ray
That lengthens out by slow degrees
Pierces the bamboo-curtained door,
And shadows from the unseen trees
Pattern the matted floor.
