Background
A description of the experience
HOT SILENCE
The serpent-rooted pine-trees, row on row
]ust as they stood a thousand years before,
Rise up innumerable along the shore.
Their glittering cones fleck the white sand
below.
The sea is bright with many sails. They
look
As though they had been fastened there
in play.
The green hills on the islands far away
Are small and clear like paintings in a
book.
On air and sea there lies a noonday lull:
Not even a ripple stirs the mirrored sky
Or wakes the slumbering fish, and not
a sigh
Ruffies the smooth back of the flying gull.
