Poems of Tulsidas - translated by Professor John Stratton Hawley
It's as if you thought your body
was shielded with copper
and you didn't need the Lord,
But don't you know, lowly one,
that death is overhead?
Who hasn't surrounded himself
with land and house,
Wife and wealth,
sons and friends-
But whose have they become?
Can they go with you when you go?
They are reflections
of your own deceit, those loves.
Kings who conquered the world,
who bound up the ruler of the realm of death-
Those great kings: Death ate them for breakfast.
What, then, will he do with you?
Look, and think about what is true,
what the Vedas themselves have sung;
Even now, Tulsi, though you know,
you fail to praise the One
on whom even Siva has set his mind.
