The Art of Dying – Drs Peter and Elizabeth Fenwick

This man was dying of lymphatic cancer, this is his daughter’s account

At around 3 a.m. the night before he died, three people entered his room whom I could not see. He became very animated and even moved his arm that he had not been able to move for over a year I asked him who was in the room and he replied,

'Thomas (a good friend who had passed on), Elizabeth (an auntie that he was very close to) and Phyllis (my mother, who had also passed on).’

These people stayed with him for three hours and he laughed and was very happy.

At around 5 a.m. he waved them goodbye (and blew kisses) and his eyes followed them out of the door. I asked him if he would have a sleep then and, he said, 'Yes'. Immediately, his face lit up and he watched them enter the room again. They stayed a further one hour then left. He passed away at 2.15 p.m.
