One scientist shared a story [where] his response to the mystical experience was much more of a spiritual awakening.
Prior to the experience, the scientist was a confirmed atheist. He felt certain that when we die, all that was us returns to the earth. In his spontaneous mystical experience, he suddenly understood the Universe and knew that it is all unfolding in exactly the way that it needs to unfold for understanding to develop. He could see how everything relates to everything else and how truly beautiful and intricate that it all is. When the experience was over, he was a changed man. He found it so wonderful and surprising that he wanted to share it with everyone that he knew.
Since most of his friends had belief systems like his earlier one he met a great deal of skepticism. Those friends have gradually faded from his life, to be replaced with new friends with belief systems more similar to the one he now espouses. His interests have changed so dramatically since the STE that he just doesn’t have much in common with his old friends. As a result of the experience, he also developed a newfound psychic sensitivity to the emotions of others.
